K-1 visa: planning a marriage to a U.S. citizen.
Informational content. Each case requires an individual legal analysis. Browsing this site does not produce an automatic assessment.
The K-1 is a nonimmigrant visa for the foreign fiancé or fiancée of a U.S. citizen, for the intended purpose of marrying in the United States. After entry, the marriage to the petitioner must take place within 90 days.
The process has its own purpose and is not the same as a spouse visa. Which path to review depends on the couple's situation and the conditions of the case.
Does the K-1 already grant a green card?
No. Permanent residence involves later steps and its own requirements. Planning needs to consider the full journey.
How to prepare for the first meeting
Prepare a summary of the relationship, the dates, and the couple's plans. The consultation will help identify what needs to be checked before the next steps are defined.
